Ultrasound

An Overview of the Ultrasound Tool from Integrative Veterinary Therapies

During the past few decades, there has been a lot of research done in the medical field. This has led to the growth and development of new diagnostic and treatment tools for conditions that previously didn't have many options. One of the tools is called ultrasound. This is a powerful tool that has numerous applications in both the medical and veterinary fields. At Integrative Veterinary Therapies, we use ultrasound in a variety of ways as part of our vet care services in Ridge, NY. Trust a veterinarian from our team to help you.

How Does Ultrasound Work?

In our clinic, ultrasound is one of the most important tools that we have at our disposal. Ultrasound works by generating sound waves that are emitted from the front of a transducer. Then, using ultrasound, the waves will pass through what the transducer is placed against. The sound waves move faster through solid items than through air. The probe measures the amount of time it takes for the sound waves to pass through the surface. Then, based on the time it takes for this to happen, an image is generated. Dense items appear white while lighter items appear dark. This can be used to provide doctors with a way to see what is happening beneath the surface.

The Various Uses of Ultrasound

There are a number of ways that our vet might use ultrasound. One of the most common purposes is as a diagnostic tool. For example, our vet might use ultrasound to monitor the progression of a pet's pregnancy. Ultrasound can also indicate something that may be either a tumor or a cyst or an abscess. Because ultrasound does not require any radiation, this is a powerful tool.

In addition, some vets will also leverage ultrasound for its therapeutic capabilities. Ultrasound has revealed some possible treatment capabilities for pets with inflammation, pain, arthritis, and other conditions.
